Torture and detention conditions

Ill-treatment or inadequate conditions in places of detention.

What to do

  1. Report the case

If you or your relative experienced ill-treatment in a place of detention, report it as soon as possible — verbally or in writing.

  2. Document the evidence

If possible, obtain a medical report on any injuries and preserve witness statements.

  3. Contact the National Preventive Mechanism

NPM monitoring groups carry out visits to places of detention and can respond to such reports.

  4. File an appeal with the Ombudsman

Describe the situation via the hotline or online cabinet; if there are signs of a crime, also contact the police (102).

The Ombudsman performs the National Preventive Mechanism — regular visits to places of detention (police stations, pre-trial detention centres, penal colonies) to prevent torture and ill-treatment.
